We're Expanding Memory Care Offering at Harper’s Station Gainesville

We’ve always focused on creating an environment where residents feel supported, engaged, and truly known. Now, we’re building on that commitment in a meaningful way.

As of April 1, Harper's Station Gainesville has expanded its Memory Care offering by assuming management of the standalone Memory Care community located adjacent to Harper’s Station Gainesville.

While this neighboring community has long been part of the Gainesville landscape, it will now operate under the same approach, standards, and philosophy that guide everything we do. This allows us to create a more consistent experience across both communities while expanding our ability to serve residents with specialized needs.

For residents and families, this expansion means more access to dedicated Memory Care support, greater consistency in how care is delivered, and a stronger connection between services. It also allows us to enhance programming and provide an environment intentionally designed for individuals living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

At SRI Management, we’re constantly looking for meaningful ways to support the health, confidence, and overall well-being of the residents who call our communities home. This winter, we’re excited to introduce SilverSneakers, a nationally recognized fitness and wellness program designed specifically for adults 65 and older and offered at no additional cost to anyone enrolled in an eligible Medicare Advantage plan. Residents can participate freely, making this a welcoming and enjoyable wellness opportunity for all.

“Our goal is always to create environments where residents can live with strength, purpose, and dignity,” said Todd Filippone, President of SRI Management . “SilverSneakers aligns beautifully with that mission. SilverSneakers classes are built for real-life abilities and led by trained and credentialed instructors. Each session is thoughtfully designed with modifications so every participant can move comfortably, whether they prefer active standing routines, seated exercises, or a combination of both.

One of the first classes coming to our communities focuses on gentle, chair-supported movements that improve mobility and increase range of motion across major joints. These are exercises mimicking everyday motions, helping residents stay strong, steady, and independent. Along the way, light cognitive activities and social engagement keep minds active and connections strong.

We have already begun piloting SilverSneakers at five senior living communities, with additional SRI Management communities completing instructor training in December. Full class schedules will begin in January. Each community plans to offer classes twice weekly, taught by a Director of Activities or another designated team member who has completed SilverSneakers certification. Most communities intend to certify two instructors to ensure consistent coverage and flexibility.

One of the biggest strengths of SilverSneakers is that it’s truly accessible to every resident. The curriculum includes multiple class levels designed for a wide range of abilities, making it suitable for participants in Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Memory Care. There is no cost for residents to join. SilverSneakers also notifies Medicare Advantage members when a new location becomes available, helping families discover classes in their area and strengthening awareness of our communities.

Indigo Carolina Forest's Loudest Cheerleader

For January Fitzgerald, Director of Activities at Indigo Carolina Forest , senior living isn’t just a career, it’s a calling. Her journey began in a deeply personal way, caring for her mother Dorothy, who lived with vascular dementia.

“Those five years profoundly changed my heart, life, and perspective,” January recalls. “It gave me an appreciation for the needs of seniors, and I realized I didn’t want to step away from making a difference in the lives of those who needed it.”

That decision set her on a new path, blending her passion for dance and entertainment with her newfound mission of service.

Before leading balance classes and planning themed socials, January was performing on the biggest stage in football. As a former Carolina Panthers cheerleader, she proudly represented the team with professionalism and energy, culminating in a performance at Super Bowl XXXVIII in Houston, Texas.

“Being an NFL cheerleader required discipline, resilience, and countless hours of training,” January explains. “But beyond the performances, it was about representing the Panthers with pride and being part of a sisterhood of driven, talented women.”

Today, that same energy fuels her role at Indigo Carolina Forest.

“I’ve always loved bringing joy to others. Now I get to do that in a way that has a lasting impact. It’s difficult to even consider this a job. It’s a passion.”

Spend a day with January and you’ll quickly see that passion. You’ll also understand why she’s affectionately called Indigo’s “biggest cheerleader.” From morning until evening, she’s on the move leading activities, encouraging participation, and ensuring residents and team members feel valued.

Her work includes everything from themed socials and wellness programs to managing volunteers, coordinating with families, and even running the community’s social media. But for January, the joy comes in the in-between moments like an improv dance party in the hallway, a quick one-liner joke, or a walkie-talkie karaoke session with the clinical team.

“What matters most is creating moments of connection that residents and families carry with them long after the activity ends,” she says.

Creating Memories That Last

One of January’s most meaningful memories involves a resident who adored Elvis and teddy bears. As the resident moved into hospice care, January arranged a private performance of Teddy Bear with an Elvis tribute artist, complete with a surprise stuffed bear.

“She said, ‘This is the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me,’” January remembers.

The family later donated the bear to the community, passing it on to the resident’s closest friend.

“Two tiny gestures became deeply impactful moments,” she says. “God squeezes our hearts, and tears flow. I am so grateful to be able to give back in this way.”

And giving her everything to residents takes into account January’s philosophy on programming: balance.

“Fresh activities come from listening to residents and families and making sure there’s something for every personality,” she explains.

Her weekly balance class is one example. Drawing from her ballet training, January adapts movements to focus on core strength, posture, and mobility. She believes activities like this is about helping residents move with more confidence and stability while keeping it fun.

“It’s a win for everyone.”

She also values intergenerational connection by bringing in young people. They seem to turn any activity into a positive engagement for residents. January says the room’s energy shifts when children are involved, and the feeling is contagious. And for families following Indigo online, January captures those moments with care.

“The bricks and sticks are beautiful here, but it’s the people inside that make Indigo so special. I want families to see the joy in action. It’s not just a calendar.”

The Face of Fun

Indigo Carolina Forest's Executive Director, Randy Hudson, says, “January epitomizes what you would want in a Director of Activities. She is compassionate, genuine, energetic, fun, creative, and most importantly, empathetic. The residents light up when she walks into the room. She truly is the face of fun.”

But her influence extends far beyond scheduled activities.

“She’s the first to volunteer to help a resident, a family member, or a teammate. She gives spiritual guidance, offers a listening ear, and always provides a positive pick-me-up. In an industry where we’re often bombarded with criticism, her consistent positivity makes all the difference,” Hudson said.

Her colleagues would also say she’s the queen of surprises, always ready to spark karaoke, sneak up for a playful scare, or break into dance to make someone laugh.

With football season underway, Indigo celebrates “Team Tuesdays,” when residents proudly wear their favorite team’s gear. For many, it’s a fun nod to sports. For January, it’s also a way to connect her past with her present.

Some residents know about her NFL days, and one couple even created a shadowbox displaying her Panthers uniform and memorabilia. “It was such a thoughtful gesture,” January says. “And it’s fun to share that side of my life with residents who also love football.”

Her past as an NFL cheerleader, combined with her heart for seniors, makes January uniquely suited for her role.

“I get to cheer people on in a whole new way now,” she smiles. “And honestly, that’s the best kind of cheering there is.”

She is a spark of energy, a source of comfort, and truly Indigo Carolina Forest ’s loudest cheerleader.

U.S. Navy to Senior Living: A Veteran’s Unconventional Career Pivot

After 22 years in the United States Navy, Laura Sabo was ready for her next mission. Like many transitioning service members, she faced the uncertainty of finding a civilian career that matched her leadership experience and sense of purpose.

But when she discovered the Department of Defense (DOD) SkillBridge program, which connects veterans with industry training opportunities, she saw an unexpected path forward—one that would lead her to the senior living industry and a new way to serve.

The DOD SkillBridge initiative is designed to help military service members transition into civilian careers by providing industry-specific training, apprenticeships, and internships during their final 180 days of service. The program is mutually beneficial: service members gain hands-on experience in new fields, while companies gain access to highly trained, disciplined leaders. For Sabo, it was more than a career move—it was an awakening.

" The program gave me the opportunity to apply my leadership and discipline in a completely new environment while also discovering a deep sense of purpose in senior living, " Sabo said.

A Fresh Set of Eyes on Senior Living

From October 2024 to January 2025, Sabo worked across multiple senior living communities under SRI Management’s umbrella, learning the complexities of an industry operating at the intersection of hospitality, healthcare, and business. She trained in resident care, operations, staffing, and engagement, obtaining her MedTech license and CPR certification along the way.

Her time in the field revealed something surprising: she felt at home.

"I love the senior living industry," Sabo said. "It’s fulfilling to connect with residents. The engagement in the communities is overwhelmingly heartfelt—you can truly feel the love."

Sabo’s passion was evident. She accepted a Director of Activities role at The Canopy at Duval Station in Jacksonville, Fla., demonstrating her commitment to SRI Management while waiting for an Executive Director position to become available within the company.

"We need people from outside the industry to help us get better," said Don Bishop, CEO of SRI Management . "Having a fresh set of eyes come in and see things differently can only help us improve. Laura’s leadership experience and perspective will make us better."

From Military Leadership to Resident Care

The transition from military officer to senior living leader is not an obvious one. The senior living sector, often associated with hospitality and caregiving, does not seem like a natural extension of military service. Yet, for veterans accustomed to leading teams, making high-stakes decisions, and fostering camaraderie in challenging environments, the skills transfer seamlessly.

"Resident care was where I realized I could make the most difference," Sabo reflected. "In the military, leadership is about people—empowering them, guiding them, being there for them. In senior living, it's the same. The residents, the staff—it’s a team, a mission, a family."

Sabo’s insights were at the heart of a presentation she delivered earlier this month, where she outlined her experiences from the SkillBridge internship. She spoke about the challenges of transitioning from a structured military command to the more nuanced leadership style required in senior living.

She also shared recommendations for future participants—how veterans could prepare for a field where emotional intelligence and personal connections are as critical as operational efficiency.

Bridging Two Worlds

SRI Management’s acceptance into the DOD SkillBridge program followed a rigorous two-year application process. The initiative reflects SRI Management's broader strategy to bring diverse leadership into senior living, an industry that is facing an increasing need for dynamic, service-driven leaders as the aging population grows.

"Being accepted into the DOD SkillBridge program is a tremendous honor and a testament to our commitment to bringing service-driven leadership into senior living," SRI Management Chief Operations Officer Shelley Kaiser said. To facilitate this evacuation, buses will begin loading at 10 AM tomorrow–Tuesday– morning, ensuring a smooth and safe transition for our residents. Our dedicated team is coordinating all logistics, and each resident’s medical needs, personal belongings, and comfort are our top priorities during this move.

As of September 26, 2024, at 11:10 PM EST, Hurricane Helene officially made landfall just east of the mouth of the Aucilla River. This is about 10 miles west-southwest of Perry, Florida. Based on data from Air Force reconnaissance aircraft, the maximum sustained winds are estimated to be 140 mph

As Hurricane Helene impacts the Florida Big Bend, the next few hours are expected to be the most severe for the region, with challenging conditions expected across much of the Southeastern United States over the next 24 hours.

Debby Is A Major Rainmaker

Debby made landfall as a hurricane near Steinhatchee in Florida's Big Bend at 7 a.m. EST today, with sustained winds of 80 mph. The storm has since been downgraded to a tropical storm.

Despite this downgrade, Debby remains dangerous, bringing heavy rainfall that may cause localized flooding. The storm is now heading towards Georgia and will impact both coastal and inland areas.

SRI Management Helps Push Better Assisted Living Legislation

January 29 and February 2 were big days for assisted living bill-making in Florida, and SRI Management was in the thick of it at the Florida Capitol.

SRI Management’s Chief Financial Officer Seth Walker spoke Monday during a Florida Senate Committee for Senate Bill 238 and Thursday during a Florida House of Representatives Committee meeting for House Bill 995 . During the committee’s comment portion, Seth spoke about how Florida's insurance costs have increased. SB 238 and HB 995 successfully passed with a vote of 9-0 and 12-5, respectively.

“In 2016, the insurance cost averaged around $528 per resident per year. Today, that amount is $2,220 per resident per year, nearly quadrupling in seven years with the primary driver of these increasing costs is the rising cost of settlements and the exponential increase in the frequency of litigation," Seth said during public comment.

The next steps for both bills include a few more committee stops.

As the storm passed yesterday, most of our senior living communities were unaffected, but our Atlantic Coast communities did have a few leaks, even though they never lost power last night. Our South Carolina coastal communities of Indigo Carolina Forest , Magnolia Bridge at Murrells Inlet , and New Haven at Little River are fully operational.

No change in southern Georgia; The Canopy at Azalea Grove in Valdosta is still running on its natural gas-powered generator as the city tries to get the area back on the power grid. A majority of Valdosta is without power.

Our Sunflower Springs at Homosassa community is awaiting the State of Florida's go-ahead to return to Homosassa. We have evacuees being hosted by The Canopy at Walden Woods and Village Veranda at Lady Lake.

The outer rain bands still affect many of our Florida communities, but they have weathered the worst storm. Our Sunflower Springs at Homosassa community was evacuated ahead of Idalia; however, the building appears in good shape. No apartments were flooded, and the building never lost power.

Although Hurricane Idalia has been downgraded to a Category 1 storm, our Georgia and South Carolina communities are still on high alert. Rain bands and high wind gusts are still probable as Idalia is forecast to make its way up across Georgia and the Atlantic coast.

Hurricane Idalia Makes Landfall at Category 3

The center of Hurricane Idalia slammed Florida’s Big Bend at dangerous Category 3 strength; however, at this time, our communities that have been in the storm have weathered it. Some trailing outer rain bands still affect our communities in the Tampa and Sarasota areas, but those should be cleared as the storm moves out of the area.

A north-northeastward motion is expected through the morning, with Idalia's center forecast to move into southern Georgia later today. Idalia is forecast to turn toward the northeast and east-northeast, moving near or along the coasts of Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina late today and Thursday.

Our communities in these areas are on high alert and are closely tracking the storm.

Idalia is now a hurricane moving toward the north at nearly 14 miles per hour. A northward motion is expected today, followed by a faster north-northeast motion later today and Wednesday. On the forecast track, the center of Idalia is forecast to move over the eastern Gulf of Mexico today, reaching the Gulf Coast of Florida on Wednesday and moving close to the Carolina coastline on Thursday.

What does this mean for our communities?

As Idalia makes landfall, the impact will affect nearly all our Florida communities and some of our Georgia and South Carolina communities. Landfall is forecast in Florida’s Big Bend area, so communities on Florida’s west coast will certainly have rain, wind, and possible power outages. As Idalia goes across the state and into Georgia and South Carolina, wind and rain will continue.

As always, we are following Hurricane Idalia closely and are in constant contact with each of our community’s Executive Directors. Currently, our Florida communities are prepared, while our other communities are in the final stages of preparations.

Evacuations As Idalia Strengthens

With the safety of our residents and well-being in mind, Citrus County officials have mandated evacuations for our area in Homosassa in anticipation of a hurricane landfall in the next few days.

About half of the evacuees have been relocated inland by way of motorcoach-style buses to The Canopy at Walden Woods , while the other half have been moved inland to Village Veranda at Lady Lake . However, some residents have gone home with family until the storm passes.

The Sunflower Springs at Homosassa team accompanied the evacuees to both locations, and SRI Management senior leadership will be on-site to assist.

Walden Woods and Village Veranda staff and the Sunflower Springs team worked together to prepare meals and accommodations for the new arrivals.

Idalia Still On Track To Become Hurricane

Our communities along the projected path of Idalia have been busy preparing for the storm. Members of the corporate team are en route to assist with any logistical needs these communities may have.

The National Hurricane Center indicates Idalia is moving toward the north at just about eight miles per hour, and a northward motion is expected through tonight, followed by a faster north-northeast motion on Tuesday and Wednesday. On the forecast track, the center of Idalia is forecast to pass near or over western Cuba tonight, over the extreme southeastern Gulf of Mexico by early Tuesday, and reach the Gulf Coast of Florida on Wednesday.

Florida will experience hurricane conditions by late Tuesday or Wednesday, starting with tropical storm conditions on Tuesday. Tropical storm conditions will begin tonight in the Dry Tortugas and reach Florida's Gulf Coast by Tuesday.

Rainfall estimates include 4-8 inches from Tuesday to Thursday in parts of Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas, with up to 12 inches near Florida's landfall.

Flash floods and landslides are expected in western Cuba. Significant flooding is also expected in parts of Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas from Tuesday to Thursday.

Life-threatening surf and rip currents caused by Idalia are affecting Cuba's southern coast and eastern Yucatan while tornadoes are possible along Florida's west-central coast starting Tuesday, moving north by Tuesday night.

Key Messages From The National Hurricane Center (as of August 26 @ 8:00 PM EST)

Heavy rainfall from Tropical Depression Ten is expected across the eastern Yucatan Peninsula and western Cuba. The depression is forecast to become a tropical storm by Sunday.
The depression is forecast to strengthen during the next few days and could become a hurricane over the eastern Gulf of Mexico, bringing a potential of dangerous storm surge, heavy rainfall, and strong winds to portions of the west coast of Florida and the Florida Panhandle by the middle of next week.
Heavy rainfall is also likely to spread into portions of the Southeastern United States by mid-to-late next week. Although it is too soon to specify the exact location and magnitude of these impacts, people in these areas should monitor updates to the forecast of this system.

It's likely to turn into a tropical depression this weekend or early next week as it moves north over the eastern Gulf of Mexico. With last week's and this week's heat waves throughout the U.S., it's important for seniors - and others - to take precautions during these hot days.

As we age, our bodies become less able to regulate temperature, and extreme heat can put seniors at risk for heat exhaustion, dehydration, and heat stroke. With summer temperatures on the rise, it's important for seniors and their caregivers to take precautions to stay safe during heat waves. Here are some senior living safety tips for extreme heat days.

First and foremost, it's important to stay hydrated. Seniors should drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol and caffeine, which can dehydrate the body. It's also important to avoid going outside during the hottest parts of the day and to stay in air-conditioned areas as much as possible. If air conditioning is not available, consider going to a public place that has it, such as a library or shopping mall.

Wearing light, loose-fitting clothing can also help seniors to stay cool. It's important to wear a hat and sunglasses when outside to protect from the sun's rays, and to apply sunscreen to exposed skin. Seniors should also avoid strenuous activity during extreme heat, and take frequent breaks if they must be outside.

It's important for caregivers to check on seniors regularly during extreme heat to make sure they are staying cool and hydrated. They should drink plenty of fluids, such as water and sports drinks containing electrolytes, and not consume alcohol or caffeinated beverages.

Heat edema is a swelling in the ankles and feet when getting hot. A solution is to rest while the legs are up to help reduce swelling. If that doesn’t work fairly quickly, check with a doctor.

Heat rash is a skin irritation from heavy sweating. It causes red clusters of small blisters that look similar to pimples on the skin. A person's skin may feel itchy or may feel a “prickly” tingling pain. They should keep the infected area dry, use powder to sooth the rash, and stay in cool areas.

Heat exhaustion is a warning that our body can no longer keep itself cool. Someone with heat exhaustion might feel thirsty, dizzy, weak, uncoordinated, and nauseated. They may sweat a lot, and their body temperature may stay normal, but their skin may feel cold and clammy. Some people with heat exhaustion have a rapid pulse. They should rest in a cool place and get plenty of fluids. If they don’t feel better soon, get medical care. Be cautious because heat exhaustion can progress to heat stroke.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency in which the body’s temperature rises above 104°F. Signs of heat stroke are fainting; confusion or acting strangely; not sweating even when it’s hot; dry, flushed skin; strong, rapid pulse; or a slow, weak pulse. When a person has any of these symptoms, they should seek medical help right away and immediately move to a cooler place, such as under shade or indoors. They should also take action to lower their body temperature with cool clothes, a cool bath or shower, and fans.

Sun exposure , also known as sunburn, is a sign of skin damage due to extreme or long exposure. Skin may appear red and tender, develop blisters, start to peel, and be warm to the touch. Severe reactions may cause fever, chills, nausea, or rash. Prevent sunburn by wearing protective clothing that covers your skin and staying out of direct sunlight. Using a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher can also help prevent sunburns, but be sure to reapply often. If a person becomes sunburned, wear lightweight clothing, take cool showers, moisturize affected areas, and stay out of the sun so the skin can heal.

Seniors and their caregivers should take precautions to stay safe during extreme heat days. Staying hydrated, avoiding the hottest parts of the day, wearing appropriate clothing, and avoiding strenuous activity can all help seniors to stay cool and avoid heat-related illness. By following these senior living safety tips, seniors can enjoy the summer months while staying safe and healthy.

Celebrating Seagrass Village of Port Orange

Hurricane Ian finally behind the Florida east-coast community.

Last September, Hurricane Ian wreaked havoc along the west coast of Florida while making landfall as a Category 4 storm. As the storm crossed the Sunshine State, it slowed over Florida's east coast, all the while dumping a historic amount of rain.

Seagrass Village of Port Orange felt Ian's wrath and had a substantial amount of water enter the community. So much so that the first floor had flood damage. Within hours of the storm's passing, the situation was assessed and a repair plan was enacted.

After months of restoration work and supply chain delays, today a celebration was had — a re-grand opening of sorts. There was food and drink, and even the city's mayor was on hand to celebrate.

"Today is a great day for us," Seagrass Village of Port Orange's Executive Director Sandra Davis said. "We can officially say Ian is behind us."

Cartoonist George Pieper Draws From Experience

Now, he spends his time teaching others how to draw, and how to come up with stories worth telling.

"It's the process that gets me excited," George says. "It's coming up with something and then making it happen. It might not be perfect, but it's mine."

Nelson Ford’s job requires him to fix things. From televisions to patching holes in walls, Nelson has a knack – and a love – for making things become new again.

As the Director of Maintenance for The Beacon at Gulf Breeze , a Florida Assisted Living and Memory Care community in Gulf Breeze, Nelson is as skilled as they come. But he has one skill that many don’t know he has: Pinball.

“Yeah, I’ve really gotten into it over the years. I’m just lucky my girlfriend loves pinball, too,” Nelson said with a laugh. “My next machine has been ordered and will pay homage to Sean Connery's 007.”

"Gotten into it" is an understatement: He has a dedicated arcade-like room in his home.

He’s definitely gotten into it.

Nelson developed a love for pinball at a young age. Each machine merged his love of mechanics, technology, and art into one brightly lit, glass-filled case.

“As a kid, I always thought they were so cool in arcades,” Nelson said. “So, when I grew up, I got a few pinball machines and I made myself an arcade. It’s a kid’s dream.”

He has owned ten machines over the years. Sometimes he buys working machines, but sometimes he will buy an old machine to refurbish.

“These machines have so much history. If I can fix them up and get them back up and running, others can experience the thrill of these works of art.”

And that’s what Nelson does – makes things new again.

Navy Veteran Captained His Way

Retired U.S. Navy Captain Laurence Grimes knows first-hand about “being pulled up by one’s bootstraps.” That expression is a salute to working hard, and Larry, as he’s known around The Arbors of Gulf Breeze , knows a lot about that.

How could he go from peeling potatoes and getting seasick as one of the most junior enlisted Navy sailors, an E-1, to commanding his own ship?

“I worked hard,” Larry said. “That’s the secret, and I wanted to make something of myself to prove I could do it. So, I just worked hard.”

His father also worked hard in the fresh produce business. It was this business that forced Larry to grow up in two different cities, which almost felt worlds apart: Winchester, Massachusetts, just about eight miles north of downtown Boston, and Coral Gables, Florida, a city that today has been nearly swallowed up by Miami.

Two cities separated by nearly 1,600 miles, but both were of importance to Larry’s family because when there are two to three feet of snow on the ground, it’s hard to get fruit and vegetables to grow.

So each summer, Massachusetts was home, and in the winter months the family would escape the fury of New England’s winters by living in south Florida. Bouncing from city to city was the norm for most of Larry’s life.

“It was just something we did,” Larry said matter of fact-like. “I didn’t know anything else.”

Boston to Miami … Miami to Boston. Then the cycle would repeat.

It wasn’t until high school that Larry stayed in Coral Gables long enough to finish Ponce De Leon High School in 1949 at the age of 17.

Shortly after completing high school, Larry entered the U.S. Naval Academy.

“I knew I wanted to do something with my life. I wanted to be someone who helped my country. I remember seeing the guys coming back from Europe after World War II and said to myself, ‘That’s what I can do.’ So, I did it.”

After graduating from the Naval Academy in 1955, Larry went on to George Washington University to earn a master’s degree, and then furthered his studies at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. And let’s not forget the 18 months in flight school where Larry learned how to fly nearly anything in the Navy’s arsenal.

“I started flying seaplanes because the Navy didn’t have anyone who could fly them,” Larry said laughing.

Between graduating from the Naval Academy and learning to fly airplanes, the Vietnam War was taking shape half a world away from the United States. Larry’s smarts and training would serve him well.

He was a pilot, and a good one at that, during the Vietnam War. The years of hard work were paying off and the Navy took notice of this young guy and gave him a big opportunity: Become the Executive Officer for the aircraft carrier USS Midway during the humanitarian evacuation mission of Saigon known as Operation Frequent Wind in 1975.

From that successful mission, Larry was rewarded yet again. And from 1976 to 1978, the son of a fresh produce businessman was the captain of the USS Duluth. This ship’s primary function included a unique capability to land and support Marine forces through sea and air, but because of its unique design, also a perfect platform for humanitarian missions such as evacuations.

The hardworking USS Duluth was a perfect fit for the hardworking Larry Grimes.

Throughout Larry’s naval career, he has won many awards, titles, and medals. In his possession is the United States Bronze Star, the Republic of Vietnam Bronze Star, and the Air Medal for Combat Support Missions to name just a few. His walls are adorned with proof he was Top Gun cool well before Tom Cruise was even born, and it’s those achievements that serve as reminders of perseverance.

"I learned to never give up,” Larry said. “I might have started at the lowest position, but I worked my way up to command a ship and two squadrons. I think that says something about hard work.”

Nicole Breaking Down, But Rain Still Present

Our Florida, Alabama, and southern Georgia communities were met with rain and high wind gusts; however, they weathered the storm with little disruption.

All communities north of central Georgia are experiencing rain, with some high wind gusts. Portions of the southeastern United States are under tornado watches or are expected to be throughout the day.

Nicole is making her way through the Southeastern United States and is now a tropical depression bringing rain and dissipating winds.

The depression is moving toward the north-northwest near 16 MPH. On the forecast track, the center of Nicole will move across central and northern Georgia this morning and over the western Carolinas later today.

Maximum sustained winds are near 35 MPH with higher gusts.

Nicole is expected to become a post-tropical cyclone later today, then dissipate tonight or early Saturday.

Rain & Wind Hitting the Southeast

Our communities are reporting very little disruption:

The Canopy at Walden Woods lost power briefly and the backup generators worked as tested. Walden Woods has had their power restored.

Seagrass Village of Fleming Island had internet and phone service outages, but those services are coming back online sporadically.

Most communities in the storm’s path have been experiencing wind, some high gusts and rain. Communities affected are faring well, and those yet to experience Nicole are prepared for her arrival.

At the 4:00 PM EST update from the National Hurricane Center, Tropical Storm Nicole is moving toward the northwest near 15 MPH, and this general motion should continue this evening, followed by a turn toward the north tonight. Nicole is expected to accelerate north northeastward on Friday.

On the forecast track, the center of Nicole will move along the coast of the Florida Big Bend region for the next several hours before moving across the eastern Florida Panhandle. After that, Nicole should move northward over Georgia later tonight, and then move through the southeastern United States on Friday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 45 MPH with higher gusts. These winds are mainly occurring over the Gulf of Mexico to the west of the center. Little change in strength is expected this evening while the center moves along the coast of the Florida Big Bend. Nicole is expected to weaken to a depression over Georgia tonight, and then it is expected to dissipate over the Mid-Atlantic United States by Friday night.

Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 175 miles from the center. A Weather STEM station on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville recently reported a wind gust of 54 MPH.

Hurricane Nicole has been downgraded to tropical storm status as she moves up the Florida peninsula.

Our communities along Florida’s east coast are faring very well – most have gotten rain and high wind gusts, but nothing that wasn’t expected or managed. Those communities not on the east coast are beginning to feel winds pick up and rain has started. So far, communities are in good shape and spirits.

The storm is expected to turn toward the northwest and north-northwest is expected later today and tonight, followed by an acceleration toward the north and north-northeast on Friday. On the

forecast track, the center of Nicole will move across central Florida this morning, possibly emerge over the far northeastern Gulf of Mexico this afternoon, and then move across the Florida Panhandle and Georgia tonight and on Friday.

Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 60 MPH with higher gusts. Additional weakening is forecast while Nicole moves over land during the next day or two, and the storm is likely to become a tropical depression over Georgia tonight or early Friday.

Nicole remains a large tropical storm with tropical-storm-force winds extending outward up to 450 miles from the center, especially to the north. Daytona Beach, Florida, recently reported sustained winds of 49 MPH with a wind gust of 70 MPH.

Hurricane Nicole Brings Wind, Rain & Surge

At the 10:00 PM EST update from the National Hurricane Center, Nicole has made its expected turn toward a west-northwestward heading. The system should turn toward the northwest and north during the next day or so while moving along the western side of a mid-level anticyclone, moving over the Florida peninsula and northern Florida.

In 36 to 48 hours, Nicole should accelerate north-northeastward. The official track forecast is about the same as the previous one and remains close to the multi-model consensus prediction.

The hurricane has little time to strengthen further before making landfall in Florida. Weakening will occur while Nicole moves over Florida, and even though the center may briefly emerge over the extreme northeastern Gulf of Mexico, this is not likely to result in any significant re-intensification.

The system should weaken to a depression and become a post-tropical cyclone over the southeastern United States. Nicole should merge with another extratropical low over the eastern United States after 48 hours.

At the 10:00 PM EST update from the National Hurricane Center, Air Force Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate Tropical Storm Nicole is close to hurricane strength and is expected to form into a hurricane at some point Wednesday. Nicole is expected to remain at hurricane strength when it reaches the east coast of Florida.

Currently, Nicole has tropical-storm-force winds extending outward up to 380 miles from the center, and is moving toward the west-southwest near 10 MPH with a west-southwestward to westward motion that is expected through early Wednesday. A west-northwestward motion is forecast to begin later Wednesday, followed by a turn toward the northwest and north on Thursday and Thursday night.

On the forecast track, the center of Nicole will approach the northwestern Bahamas overnight, move near or over those islands on Wednesday, and approach the east coast of Florida within the hurricane warning area Wednesday night or early Thursday.

Nicole's center is then expected to move across central and northern Florida into southern Georgia Thursday and Thursday night.

Today, the weather event known as Nicole was upgraded to a Tropical Storm, and is looking like she will strengthen into a hurricane over the next day or so. Our communities throughout the Southeastern United States are preparing as TS Nicole may affect each one in some way or another.

Our communities along the east coast of Florida are looking at possible Hurricane-like conditions, while our communities in central Florida and along the Florida's west coast are bracing for possible tropical storm like conditions. Communities in Georgia, South Carolina and even into Virginia might be affected with rain and possible high wind gusts.

During a call today with our community Executive Directors, we discussed preparation and processes for storm readiness. Each community is working toward and preparing for Nicole to make landfall.

Maximum sustained winds are near 70 MPH with higher gusts. Once a hurricane, Nicole is expected to remain at hurricane strength until it reaches Florida’s east coast.

Currently, Nicole is a large tropical storm with tropical-storm-force winds extending outward up to 460 miles especially to the north of the center.

Nicole is moving toward the west near 12 MPH with a turn toward the west-northwest expected tonight, followed by a turn toward the northwest on Thursday, and north or north-northeast on Friday. Nicole's center is then expected to move across central and northern Florida into southern Georgia Thursday and Thursday night, and then across the Carolinas Friday and Friday night.

Florida Gov. Declares State of Emergency

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has issued Executive Order (EO) 22-253 , declaring a State of Emergency for 34 counties in the potential path of Subtropical Storm Nicole.

Gov. DeSantis has issued the EO in an abundance of caution so communities can prepare and families and businesses can create a plan and gather necessary resources in the event that Subtropical Storm Nicole gains in strength. The Governor’s Office and Florida Dept. of Emergency Management are in constant contact with local government officials from all 67 counties, the National Hurricane Center, and the National Weather Service.

"While this storm does not, at this time, appear that it will become much stronger, I urge all Floridians to be prepared and to listen to announcements from local emergency management officials," Gov. Ron DeSantis said. "We will continue to monitor the trajectory and strength of this storm as it moves towards Florida."

Regardless of the intensity or exact path of Subtropical Storm Nicole, Floridians are reminded to prepare for an increased risk of coastal flooding, heavy winds, rain, rip currents, and beach erosion. Wind gusts can be expected as soon as today along Florida’s East Coast.

Subtropical Storm Nicole Most Likely to Affect Florida, Others

Each one of our senior living communities within the Cone of Uncertainty is preparing for Nicole and monitoring its movement.

The storm is moving toward the northwest near 9 mph (15 km/h). A slower northwestward motion is expected later this afternoon through tonight. A turn toward the west or west-southwest is then forecast to begin by Tuesday night and that motion should continue through early Thursday. On the forecast track, the center of Nicole will approach the northwestern Bahamas on Tuesday and Tuesday night, move near or over those islands on Wednesday, and approach the east coast of Florida Wednesday night.

Maximum sustained winds are near 45 mph (75 km/h) with higher gusts. Gradual strengthening is forecast during the next few days, and Nicole is forecast to be at or near hurricane intensity by Wednesday or Wednesday night while it is moving near or over the northwestern Bahamas.

A turn toward the northwest with a decrease in forward speed is expected later today with a westward or west-southwestward motion is forecast Tuesday through early Thursday. On the forecast track, the center of Nicole will approach the northwestern Bahamas on Tuesday, move near or over those islands on Wednesday, and approach the east coast of Florida by Wednesday night.

Monitoring Invest 98L

Update – 12:00 AM

We are monitoring Invest 98L, which at this time, is an area of low pressure located more than 300 miles north of Puerto Rico.

It is producing a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms, and this system is forecast to move generally northwestward over the southwestern Atlantic where environmental conditions appear conducive for additional development, and a subtropical or tropical storm is likely to form in the next day or so.

The system is then forecast to turn westward or west-southwestward over the southwestern Atlantic by the middle part of this week where additional development is possible.

Jane Christensen: Ghostwriter, Author & Educator

From the time she was a little girl, Jane Christensen has always enjoyed reading books. Short stories were good; long novels were better, but regardless of the number of pages, books have held a special place in her heart and on her shelves.

In 1956, Jane graduated from Colorado College with a Bachelor of Arts in English and then went on to earn a Master of Humanities degree from The University of Edinburgh in Scotland. Once she finished her degree programs, she immediately set her sights on creating a path for her career.

“I just loved it. All of it,” Jane, a current resident in The Glen at Lake Oconee Village in Greensboro, Georgia, said. “Reading led to writing and writing led to many open doors.”

As it so happened, a ghostwriting job opened and Jane started writing materials for publications and books – all under the name of others.

And in 1967, Jane made a move and started working on The Bonnie Prudden Show , a Canadian talk show and exercise television series which aired on CBC Television from 1965 to 1968. The show’s namesake, Bonnie Prudden, was an American physical fitness pioneer, rock climber and mountaineer.

It was Jane’s job to transform into Bonnie Prudden, or at least on paper. Jane was tasked to respond to all the mail as if she was Bonnie Prudden, and Jane also ghost wrote fitness books for Bonnie.

As the 1970s made their debut, Jane had become a famously anonymous writer. But something was missing, and it wasn’t her name as the byline: It was passion.

Although she enjoyed her unique occupation as a ghostwriter, she found her true passion was teaching literature to school-aged children.

“All children have the capability to learn, but they must be excited, and it is the job of the teacher to bring this excitement into the classroom,” she said. “I started practicing the art of teaching at Everitt Junior High School in Wheat Ridge, Colorado,” Jane said with a laugh.

She sought to better the education system any way she could for her students, and soon realized how out of touch some of the schoolbooks were she was using.

Jane felt most schoolbook authors hadn’t seen the inside of a public school in years or never taught in one. She decided she could not sit idly by and took it upon herself to publish her own books.

One was Patterns of Communicating, A Language Series for Grades 7-9 and another was Medallion Series of America . As she wrote, more writing jobs appeared. And before long, Jane had written for many other publications, a few more books, articles, and even had the opportunity to help create a National Collegiate Exam.

“I simply wanted to help children learn,” Jane said. “I wanted to make a difference.”

From ghostwriter to published author to teacher, Jane Christensen certainly has made a difference.

And that’s something she can put her name on.

You can take the newsman out of the newsroom, but you can't take the news out of the newsman. This is Paul Yates.

And on a sunny afternoon in Valdosta, Georgia, he enjoys watching his grandkids Collin, 4, and Blair, 1, play during a visit with his son, Reid. In between conversations, you can catch him keeping a pulse on the daily news from a feed on his phone.

"I still like to keep up with what's going on outside of my little world, too," he said with a smile.

He entered the field of journalism at the time of hard-hitting investigative reporting surrounding Watergate. The work of Woodward and Bernstein, along with a childhood fascination with the nightly news, drew Paul into the world of broadcasting.

"Other kids would go out to play baseball. I would be glued to the tube watching the Democratic National Convention," he chuckled. "My parents must've wondered, ‘What's wrong with that boy?'"

He started where he could get his foot in the door as a floor director - "a glorified stagehand," he called it - at WAGA Channel 5 in Atlanta, Georgia. Working his way up, he cut film for the day's broadcasts and eventually found himself in front of the camera reporting the news.

"Through the Grace of God and good fortune, they let me try it and it worked out," he said.

Reporting on everything from car crashes to Presidential visits with Carter through Obama, Paul found his niche in political reporting. He spent 40 years at Channel 5 covering the Georgia legislature, having the ear of long-time Governor and personal political hero, Zell Miller, on a regular basis.

"He was a political genius and could work the media like no one's business," he recalled.

Paul noted Miller's institution of the Hope Scholarship in Georgia as a story he was particularly proud of reporting because of the good it did for so many young students in the state, including his two children.

His son Reid recalls childhood buddies being impressed his dad was on tv, but says it didn't seem like a big deal to him at the time.

"I'd watch him on the five o'clock news and knew he'd be home soon," he said, recalling the day-to-day routine. "When he got home, he was just normal. He was Daddy."

Despite his breadth of experience, Paul puts his professional life in a humble perspective.

"I had a satisfying high-profile career in the public realm, but the most important thing is to show up for work every day and do your work with pride, honesty and integrity. Hopefully, you make a little difference in some lives."

Paul speaks with great admiration for the work he sees daily at The Canopy at Azalea Grove where he calls home.

"The caring and concern I have seen on the part of these folks has been remarkable," he said. "I'm grateful for what they do. They're my new heroes."

Meet Village Veranda's Dancing Queen

Lyn Trudeau has danced since she was around five years old. She remembers hanging bed sheets on the clothesline in the backyard as the backdrop for performances with her sister at their home in the Chicago suburbs.

Now 80 years old and living at the Village Veranda at Lady Lake in Florida, she'll say her dancing days are behind her. Throw on “Barbara Ann” by The Beach Boys or “Jailhouse Rock” by Elvis Presley, though, and the rhythm immediately flows through her.

She'll twist her hips, shimmy her shoulders, clap to the beat and maybe even grab an unsuspecting resident of her retirement facility to twirl her around.

She might even break out a move or two from her show days opening for some of the most popular singers of the 1960s, from the Rat Pack to Mel Tormé.

“When the music is on, I just move,” Trudeau said after demonstrating a kick line and pretending to fluff her dress skirt up behind her.

She studied dance growing up and was the first in her family to forgo school for a different passion.

“I just loved to dance and perform, and it was fun, practicing all the time, tapping around the house and ruining the floors,” she said. “My parents had gone to college, and my sister had been, and here’s Lyn off dancing.”

Trudeau studied jazz, tap, and ballet and took classes with Rudy Noel, a well-known choreographer in Chicago. When he was asked to provide dancers to open and close shows, he selected Trudeau as one of six to become the Rudy Noel Dancers.

She danced with the group for three to four years in her early 20s in the 1960s opening for famous singers that came through Chicago.

The biggest was the Rat Pack, consisting of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford. She also opened for big names like Mel Tormé, Vic Damone, Anita Bryant and Eydie Gormé.

Trudeau remembers Sinatra and Martin keeping mostly to themselves, but her eyes light up when she reminisces about Davis.

“He was a great guy, and he was the only one that was personable,” she said. “Sammy Davis was really friendly and talked with us and sat with us and carried on. He was just so friendly and full of fun and liked to goof off with the ladies.”

Not to mention he had a great voice, she says.

Trudeau left show business a few years later when she got married but still considers dance a defining part of her life, whether as a young girl in the backyard, a professional on the big stage or the life of the dance floor in the activity room of Village Veranda at Lady Lake.

Arleen Conrad: One Classical Lady

Arleen Conrad’s left hand glides over the neck of her violin as her right commands the bow to sway this way and then that way. And then back.

This repetition – finger slide, bow pull, finger slide, bow push – creates a love that Arleen has known since childhood: Music.

“I fell in love with music while listening to classical music on WQXR radio out of New York,” Arleen said. “There was an endless supply of incredible music and musicians to listen to and learn from being so close to New York City.”

Arleen grew up in New Jersey but was dialed into New York radio. Over the airwaves her radio picked up concertos and sonatas, and by eight years old Arleen had picked up her first violin.

“I would play and play,” she said. “In the beginning, I was playing whatever and wherever I could.”

And she practiced. Then practiced more. Then even more.

By the age of 13 she joined her first symphony orchestra. Arleen then began playing with local trios and quartets, and eventually the hours of practice led her to the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra.

She began spending a lot of time in Manhattan with music professors and playing in small groups to better herself as a musician

Eventually, Arleen found herself at the University of Arizona. Then in 1973, she moved to Panama City.

With her extensive musical knowledge, she quickly realized there weren’t many opportunities to play, perform or teach in Panama City. But instead of giving up, she created her own opportunities.

Arleen was a part of creating a symphony at then Gulf Coast Community College – now Gulf Coast State College – and taught students while being the concertmaster. It was an all-hands-on deck as momentum built and she began a journey of teaching well over 100 students the art of playing the violin.

Many of those students have gone on to musical careers. One stand-out student is Ford Seeuws, a musician and cinematographer.

"She was really such a formative part of my life," Seeuws said in a May 2018 interview with the Panama City News Herald. “She took me under her wing. I fell in love with it.”

Seeuws fell in love with playing music just as Arleen had so many decades before. It’s proof that time isn’t a constraint to the classics like those Arleen and Seeuws play. A classic is just that, a classic.

The complicated simplicity of classical music is made to look and sound easy at the hands of a master like Arleen, but it’s the years of repetition that have made the difficult easy.

Unlike the black and white notes that compose a piece of music, life is often not as predictable.

She and her husband lost their home to Hurricane Michael in 2018. Although they have many children and grandchildren, there wasn’t a comfortable place for them to call home until they found Seagrass Village of Panama City Beach .

“When I walked in, I knew this was my new home,” Arleen said with a smile. “I just love the activities here and the activities director, Randy Patton, is the best there is. And happy hour is my favorite time because I see so many of my friends and get to meet new people.”

Meeting new people and continuing to build relationships is what Arleen has continued to do since moving into the independent living community.

All it really takes is that first step – like playing the violin.

Executive Director Leads From The Front

In Thomasville, Ga., century-old oak trees cast their welcomed shade on brick-paved streets. And east of downtown, an assisted living and memory care community by the name of The Residence at Oak Grove has taken root.

It’s also here where Executive Director Patricia Peak has grown into a leader.

When you meet her, you can’t forget her. She has a warm and welcoming nature mixed with a hearty laugh that keeps the mood light but always professional.

Patricia – Ms. Pat to the locals – has created something special at The Residences at Oak Grove. Her charisma is infectious, and The Oak Grove team is stronger today than yesterday, a testament to her leadership style. She’s hands-on without hovering and allows her team to do their jobs – a sign of true leadership mixed with experience.

“I’ve worked in various positions throughout my senior living career,” Patricia said. “Each role has given me the insight needed to become the best Executive Director I can be. And having a background in many areas helps our team since I have perspective on what their job and role entails.”

Becoming the Executive Director didn’t come easy.

“It’s a lot of hard work!” she says with a laugh. “I’ve worked very hard to get here and blessed to be in a position to help,” she said. “But the people I work with every day to support our residents work hard, too. I’m grateful for them, and I hope they truly know that.”

Ms. Pat has been at The Residence at Oak Grove since it opened in 2020; she knows this senior living community inside and out.

“I love this place. I really do!” she said. “The residents keep me going. They make my day, and I want anyone coming here to know they’re going to love it. From the care to the food.”

In Thomasville, foodies flock to the Jackson Street area for well-known restaurants like Jonah’s Fish and Grits, Chophouse on the Bricks, Liam’s Restaurant, and Sweetgrass Dairy among others.

The Residence at Oak Grove can hold its own, though. The lunch menu on an early-June day included herbed glazed salmon with asparagus and rice pilaf. And that’s Ms. Pat’s doing.

“We’re going to have the best food around and our kitchen knows how serious we are about not just good food, but great food.”

That’s Ms. Pat: Leading and making the team know exactly the direction they’re all going.

Just like those strong oak trees all over Thomasville, The Residence at Oak Grove is going in the best direction: Up.

Port Orange Resident is a Part of Baseball History

On a warm June 2022 day, 86-year-old Fred Beneby walked onto a baseball field – something he did quite frequently when he was a bit younger as a right fielder in the Amateur Negro League .

Now, as a resident in Seagrass Village of Port Orange , Fred doesn’t play ball anymore, but the love of the all-American game is as much a part of him today as it was more than 70 years ago.

“My love for baseball started because of Jackie,” Fred said.

Jackie was none other than Jackie Robinson.

In 1947 at the age of 12, Fred saw Jackie Robinson in person when he and Roy Campanella were in the Fort Pierce, Florida, area to help present trophies to a winning basketball team.

This was the same year Jackie Robinson made his Major League Baseball debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers. And it was the very same year that baseball’s color barrier was broken when Jackie’s cleats touched the clay diamond for the first time.

It left an impression on Fred.

Just two years later in 1949, Fred began his baseball journey with the Paradise Giants, who became the Hollywood Red Birds, who then flew the coop to become the Dania Red Birds.

His original flannel jerseys are gone now – some to a museum, others lost to time – but he had a Dania Red Birds replica made in a lighter weight and more Florida-friendly material. The one he proudly wears around today is a perfect fit and reminder of where life has taken Fred.

Life though, like baseball, throws lots of curveballs.

One curveball was the start of the Korean War in June of 1950. Another was the draft: Military draft, not baseball draft.

Fred was drafted into the United States Army and served in Korea. Even during his military service, he continued to play baseball.

But his batting and fielding days were coming to end.

Upon returning to the United States in 1958, he met his wife, had a daughter five years later and realized not getting paid to play amateur baseball didn’t make sense now that he had a family.

He ended his baseball career in the early 1960s but started a 30-year career at Southern Bell, later known as AT&T. Fred became a technician, then a job in marketing followed by a management role in the human resources department.

Yet, Fred’s love affair with the game continues today.

“Seagrass Village of Port Orange helped me organize black history month with a display based on my baseball playing days with the Dania Red Birds.”

And Fred knows how to bring people together: Sports.

“Being involved with sports is one of the best things for people coming together and living together peacefully because of the diversity,” Fred said.

There’s no doubt Jackie Robinson is looking down and smiling at Fred’s contribution to the game of baseball and more importantly, life.

Randy Hudson Named Executive Director at Indigo Carolina Forest

Randy Hudson has been named the Executive Director for Indigo Carolina Forest , but leading is nothing new to Randy.

For more than ten years, he has worked in senior living while being involved with over 40 communities across the country in a regional capacity.

Along with that decade-long experience, he is a licensed administrator in South Carolina and Florida as well as a Certified Dementia Practitioner and a Certified Montessori Dementia Care Professional. Randy is also a graduate of Auburn University and holds an MBA from Kennesaw State University.

He and his wife both enjoy traveling, volunteering, and walking on the beach with their three dogs. They are dedicated Auburn fans and have one son – an Auburn graduate – who is currently serving as an Army officer in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Technology advancements are reshaping how communities engage residents and their families, and Senior Director of Experience Rich DeLong knows all about it. He was selected to be on a June 1, 2022, panel discussing the ways technology is enhancing the resident experience today, trends likely to be seen in the future, and how to prepare to use new technology in senior communities.

While in Orlando, the Senior Housing News DISHED/WELLNESS event combined the two hottest sectors in the resident experience and brought together the executives from providers defining the trends in today’s marketplace.

"Technology is something not to be feared in senior living,” DeLong said. "Embracing change that is good is what we’re looking to incorporate into our community experiences. There are things like personal assistants to help schedule and just as important to help remember those scheduled appointments. But senior tech goes beyond the Google and Alexas of the world.”

The event was fast-paced, hyper-focused, delivered unparalleled access for providers looking to listen and learn from their peers, and was an incredible opportunity for building relationships with service providers.

In the technology space, the wellness experience was discussed at length. Meet the New Executive Director of Sunflower Springs Indian Land

Robert "Rob" Pila has been named the Executive Director of Sunflower Springs Indian Land in South Carolina.

"When this opportunity came along, I was very excited to be considered to oversee the operation and success of Sunflower Springs Indian Land," Rob said. "And now to be a part of the SRI Management team with their history and reputation, I’m thrilled to lead one of their brand new Assisted Living communities."

Rob’s first taste of the senior living industry was when he was a Director of Sales and Marketing. He has most recently served as an Executive Director in an Assisted Living and Memory Care community in York, South Carolina, about 40 miles to the west of Indian Land.

For the past 12 years, the city of Indian Land is where Rob and his family have called home.

Rob has two children: A football-playing son who will graduate college with a double-major next year and a nine-year-old daughter who is considered the "old soul" of the family. Rob is proud of his children and is thankful to have a spouse who understands having a husband who is the Executive Director of a community is not always the typical nine-to-five job.

"No day is ever the same," Rob said. "That’s what makes me enthusiastic to get to the community each day and work to make residents’ experiences the best they can have."

Turning 100 Years Old with No Regrets

Some might say Mary Louise Bondegard has an inquisitiveness about her that has led to a long life for the 100-year-old.

"My advice for living a long and fulfilling life is to have plenty of friends," said Bondegard, who lives at Vintage Care Senior Living in Palatka, Fla. "Also be around people of all ages, exercise daily, try not to worry by putting your trust in the Lord and stay curious."

That curiosity is part of what led Bondegard to learn to use an iPad her granddaughter gave to her when she was 96.

"I had never used a computer," she said. "I really enjoyed learning to use it and I use it every single day to keep in touch with my family and friends. I would be lost without it."

Bondegard, who was named after both of her grandmothers, was born Feb. 12, 1922, in Minneapolis, Minn., where she grew up. She was the only child of Paul Kellogg Larson and Louise Larson.

Her mother was an accomplished pianist, who taught music to children who were blind and mentally challenged. Her father worked for a hardware company as an estimator for large commercial construction.

Bondegard has lived through many ups and downs during her century of life, including the Great Depression in 1930, World War II that began in 1939, Pearl Harbor in 1941, the Vietnam War in 1955 and seeing the first man in space in 1961, to name a few.

Bondegard recalls the time she met John, who later would become her husband.

"We met at a hamburger joint after a high school football game," she said. "John played on the opposing team."

The couple married Aug. 29, 1945, after John returned from World War II and got a job working for an air reduction sales company as a superintendent for an acetylene plant and was transferred to the the St. Louis, Illinois, area. The couple lived there for 20 years where they raised their two daughters, Marilyn Nicholson of Palatka and Karen Turlington of Houston, Texas, who recently passed away. John Bondegard died Sept. 11, 2005, after a 14-year battle with Alzheimer’s. The couple has four grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Nicholson planned a multi-day birthday celebration with family to honor her mother’s milestone event. Family came from as far away as Texas, Maryland, and Virginia.

The first day’s activities included family pictures taken by a professional photographer. The second day included an outdoor barbecue party attended by family and friends at a rental vacation house, large enough for the whole family to stay together on the St. Johns River. The third was a Champagne Brunch at the Magnolia Cafe in Palatka. A birthday party was also held at the Vintage Care Senior Living community, which included a birthday cake baked by Bondegard’s friend, Jeanette Barber.

During her working career, Bondegard worked at a hospital in the Chicago Metropolitan area as a cancer tumor registrar in the medical records department until she retired in 1987.

Before moving to Palatka in 2016 to be closer to her daughter, Marilyn, Bondegard lived on her own in the High Point community in Brooksville, Florida.

Nicholson enjoys her mother being close.

"We like to travel together to visit family and just spend time together," she said.

During her life, Bondegard was a Girl Scout and a leader and a member of Eastern Star. She and her husband were also members of the Danish Lodge, a traveling square-dance group and very active members of their church, United Church of Christ. In the past, Bondegard has enjoyed bowling and playing golf with her husband and friends, as well as dancing, playing cards and games.

Nicholson knew just the word she would use to describe her mother.

"I would describe her as always punctual and very meticulous," she said. "She has had many friends and family who love her, and she reciprocated that love."

Bondegard fulfilled one of her bucket list items when she and her husband traveled to Denmark to sightsee and research her relatives.

Bondegard’s favorite color is blue and admits she has a sweet tooth, too.

"I love ice cream and something sweet after meals," she said. "I have no regrets."

We would like to welcome three new SRI Management corporate hires to the team. Many will recognize their names and faces since these great folks have worked in various communities we manage.

Alexis Ekberg, Julia White, and Michelle Donnahoo are each stepping into a newly created position called a Corporate Lead Manager, or CLM for short. This role is responsible for managing leads both old and new in conjunction with the on-site Director of Sales at each one of our communities.

“I’m excited to have Alexis, Julia, and Michelle in this new role for SRI Management,” Vice President of Marketing Wade Goodman said. “They are going to really help people get the care they need faster by helping them navigate senior living.”

Some duties of the new role include responsibility for oversight of all leads to drive census while improving our lead to tour conversion.

Not only that, the team is also responsible for generating external business leads and referrals through SRI Management’s proven sales strategies all the while helping identify underperforming communities and develop and implement strategies to increase leads and census.

“The new role is one we’re thrilled to introduce,” Senior Corporate Director of Sales Kristy LeBlanc said. “While working throughout our communities, the Corporate Lead Managers will work hand-in-hand with local sales teams to provide future residents a better sales experience which helps us reach more leads faster.”

Georgia Governor Approves $47M Grant for Senior Living Communities

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and the Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget (OPB) have approved a $47 million ARPA COVID-19 Mitigation Grant Program.

The grant provides up to $100,000 per Assisted Living Community/Personal Care Home (25+ state-licensed beds) to assist with expenses incurred to contain and mitigate the spread of COVID-19 between March 3, 2021, and December 1, 2022.

Assisted Living communities with 25 beds or more licensed by the Georgia Department of Community Health (DCH) are encouraged to apply. Providers for each community must complete a Terms and Conditions Agreement for this grant program to begin submitting reimbursement requests for eligible expenses incurred between March 3, 2021, and December 1, 2022.

Expenses eligible for reimbursement are limited to those incurred to comply with Section 4.0 Testing Requirements and Guidance or Section 6.0 Considerations for Assisted Living Communities and Personal Care Homes of the Long-Term Care Facilities Reopening Guidance provided in the Georgia Department of Public Health Administrative Order updated October 6, 2021.

Examples of eligible expenses include those made to:

Communities receiving this grant will need to provide documentation to support the request for reimbursement of expenses as well as certify the expenses were necessary for the prevention or mitigation of COVID-19 in their community. They must also certify they will not use the proceeds of the grant to reimburse expenses that have been reimbursed from other sources or that other sources are obligated to reimburse.

The Georgia Senior Living Association is working with OPB to provide communication and education on qualifying expenses and submitting reimbursement requests. A webinar is scheduled on March 17 at 10:00 AM for eligible Assisted Living and Personal Care Home communities.

Heron Club Raises Money for Team Member with Brain Cancer

Nikki Marceus is a medical technician – med tech for short – at The Heron Club at Prestancia , an Assisted Living and Memory Care community in Sarasota.

Nikki loves the seniors she serves.

Nikki is 21 years old and has brain cancer.

Nikki seemingly always wanted to help people. From her earliest memories, she can remember being a helper, but now, at 21 years old, she’s the one needing help.

“I love being able to care for people who need my help,” Nikki said. “This job makes me feel like I make a difference, and I know I make a difference. That’s why I want to study to become a nurse.”

That was last year. This year? She wants to beat cancer.

And so far, she’s doing just that.

Nikki was diagnosed with a brain cancer normally affecting children and is not often found in adults. Medulloblastoma is the official name and it’s a scary-sounding name at that. But let’s be honest, being diagnosed with cancer by any name is a frightening realization of one’s mortality even in the those within an age range who often think they’re invincible.

“She’s going to beat this,” Meredith Humbrecht said. Meredith is the Director of Resident Services at Heron Club and has helped Nikki throughout the entire process. “Nikki’s tough and is a person who won’t give up. She doesn’t give up. She shows up.”

As her 21st birthday approached in February of 2022, so did the delicate brain surgery that would hopefully remove the cancer. Being young has its advantages, but any sort of brain surgery is risky, regardless of age or health.

And as it turns out, the team working on her made good on the results they said were likely but never promised because a surgery like this isn’t rocket science with equations, formulas, and a rigid approach to outcomes. It’s brain surgery. Although science has a hand in it, there’s an art to it, mixed with skill and wrapped in a whole lot of hope.

Nikki and others leaned on hope to get her through the most challenging time in her young life.

And when she opened her eyes for the first time after surgery, hope wasn’t some far-off, hard-to-explain expectation of better days. It was here. It was now. She had grasped hope – every straw, even the last one – and it pulled her to a place she needed to be. It kept her here with those surrounding her with love.

She had made it through the procedure, but the journey to recovery was just starting. The hospital bills were the furthest thing from her mind those first few days, but as the days passed the worry crept into Nikki’s thoughts.

“I’m grateful for the surgeons and everyone who has helped me,” Nikki said. “Now, I’m trying to figure out how to make sure the bills get paid.”

To financially help Nikki, The Heron Club at Prestancia is having a garage sale of sorts Saturday, March 19. The event kicks off at 11 in the morning and is open to the public. Items from vendors will be available for bid by way of a silent auction, and monetary donations will also be accepted.

“She’s so great and in her time of need, we really want to try and help her any way we can because she’s the one always helping others,” Executive Director Anna Hellett said. “It doesn’t matter what is going on, when we need help, she’s the first one to volunteer.”

“Now it’s our time to help her.”

SRI University Goes to the Top of the Class

Throughout SRI Management communities in 2021, we introduced the SRI University program challenging residents’ minds while helping them stay mentally fit. We believe keeping seniors mentally fit is just as important as seniors staying physically fit.

We have taken what we learned last year and tweaked the 2022 program to be even better for our residents! SRI Management’s very own Senior Director of Experience Rich DeLong is overseeing the program to ensure the experience is at the head of the class.

“There’s something amazing that happens when seniors experience SRI University,” DeLong said. “Seniors begin to feel a sense of purpose, a sense of being and a sense of place. And they’re learning about new things in a safe, social way.”

This month residents started the new “school” session and feedback has been great.

Eighty-nine-year-old Jeanne M. said, “I enjoy the SRI University learning and I look forward to it each week. It keeps me young.”

With classes slated throughout the year, our Director of Activities have plans in-hand and are excited to see residents complete each course.

“The SRI University program really puts our seniors in a setting where they can learn, interact and stay active, “January Fitzgerald, a Director of Activities in one of our South Carolina communities, said. “A program like this is important as people age. I know our residents look forward to our next class. So do I!”

SRI University is the premier life-long learning program that is designed to meet the needs of the older adult learner. Classes are offered university-style where sometimes the resident is the teacher and other times, they are the students.

Each month has an educational theme, and each week a new course is taught. Courses range from the Art of Being Happy to studying America’s most fortified locations. Not only will residents receive knowledge through this life-long learning program experience, but they will also receive a university badge and certificates of completion.

SRI University is a voluntary experience and open to all residents who would like to stay mentally fit.

“I’m excited for the future of SRI University,” DeLong said. “I’m more excited to see our seniors have such a good time engaging and being able to learn in a social manner. What’s not to love about that?”

Rich has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of South Florida and a Master of Education from Georgia Southwestern State University.

Seagrass Village in Panama City Beach Holds Largest Fundraiser of the Year

From WJHG.com — Wednesday night, the Seagrass Village sales team held their largest fundraiser of the year to help make Christmas for the senior population of Bay County more merry.

The third annual Trees to Treasure was held at the Panama City Beach Independent Living facility. Healthcare vendors decorated and donated Christmas trees for the event. These Christmas trees were open for public viewing Wednesday night. On Monday, Seagrass workers will wrap all the trees and deliver them to the Bay County Council on Aging. From there, the trees will be donated to senior families in the county that are less fortunate or experiencing hardships.

Sales Director Robin Wakefield said this is one way they work to give back to the Bay County seniors this holiday season.

"This is one way that we can pay that Christmas spirit forward and spread the meaning of Christ and the Christmas holiday. We hope it's as meaningful to the recipient as it is to us who are giving," said Wakefield.

People could view all 20 of the donated trees across the three stories of their building. Each person could vote on their favorites. The top three vote-getters were awarded prizes.

Big Bend Clinic Has Ties with CFO Seth Walker

Seth lost his mother to cancer, but her legacy lives on.

Pink ribbons pop up in October with the color being a reminder that it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. And that color – since the early 2000s – has had more meaning for SRI Management’s CFO Seth Walker and his family.

Seth’s mother, Sharon, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996 when she was just 33; she passed away in 2005 at the age of 42. At that time in Tallahassee, there was no digital mammogram machine. Women would have to travel to larger cities such as Jacksonville or Tampa for a digital mammogram.

“Mom was a big believer that early detection of breast cancer is what allowed her to beat cancer the first time,” Seth said. “This was difficult in the 1990s because the Tallahassee area did not have the cutting-edge equipment needed for early detection.”

When she passed after ten years of off-and-on remission and treatment, the Sharon Ewing Walker Breast Health Clinic was founded with funds raised in her name. The clinic brought the first digital mammogram machine to Tallahassee. Since then, the clinic has grown to a full program aimed at providing not just advanced screenings for preventive care but diagnostics and testing, state-of-the-art treatments, as well as breast health education and support programs, all from a single location with a dedicated support system.

The Walker Breast Program is Florida’s longest continuously accredited comprehensive community hospital cancer program and the Big Bend region’s only accredited breast program by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). The Walker Breast Program provides patients in the Big Bend region personalized, comprehensive, and compassionate care for breast health.

Today, the center diagnoses and treats 350+ cases of breast cancer every year.

“I know mom would be so proud because now women in our area have access to state-of-the-art equipment for early detection as well as specialized treatment options that previously were only available in larger cities,” Seth said. “Growing up we used to travel to Tampa regularly and occasionally as far as Texas for treatment. Now women have access to these types of treatments locally.”

The October #FlamingoChallenge is a lighthearted way to raise funds for local breast cancer patients, and SRI Management headquarters in Tallahassee is participating again this year.

More than 100 businesses, agencies, schools, and organizations, as well as dozens of individuals, participated in the challenge’s first year in 2020, raising over $40,000 to directly benefit patients of the Walker Breast Program at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare.

Everyone in the community is invited to participate in the #PinkPower #FlamingoChallenge including businesses, organizations, schools, and individuals. The concept is simple: Once a challenge is accepted and the recipient receives a flock of flamingos, along with a yard sign or poster about the initiative, a photo with the flock should be posted to social media along with a fundraising pledge. No amount is too small, and 100% of these tax-deductible gifts directly support local patients fighting breast cancer.

“Mom is looking down on what’s happening, and I know she’s smiling,” Seth said. “It’s something that she would definitely have got involved in.”

SRI Management Goes Virtual

SRI Management announces communities will be piloting virtual reality.

By way of virtual reality goggles and handheld controllers, potential residents and their families can now take community tours without leaving their homes.

“As the world has changed this past year, our customers’ ways of interacting have also changed,” SRI Management Chief Operations Officer Shelley Kaiser said. “We were looking at how we could take our communities to our customers, and immersive virtual reality fits that need.”

Internal SRI Management focus groups indicate this new way of touring might help those who are interested in senior housing, however, are hesitant to take a step into a community. One 86-year-old test user said she felt comfortable touring virtually and would be more likely to tour in-person.

“I just didn’t know what to expect, but it’s amazing because you really do feel like you’re there,” Maye Walker said. “I didn’t know your communities were this nice! Now I do. So, I would definitely feel more comfortable taking a ‘real’ tour.”

Each community’s Director of Sales will be trained on how to use the system, but VR may spill over into more than just sales. Directors of Activities have shown interest as well.

“Imagine having the chance to tour the Australian Outback or visit Paris,” Kaiser said. “In 2021, our residents can do just that without ever leaving their community.”

The piloting session will last a few weeks to gather real-world feedback.

Commitment Runs In Seagrass Village of Panama City Beach

It’s 5:15 in the morning, and the sound of running shoes slapping a cement sidewalk and controlled breathing fills the air. Four miles later, the run is done.

This is how Randy Patton starts his mornings six days a week. It’s one foot in front of the other for miles. Twenty fours miles a week to be exact.

“It’s called commitment and running in the morning allows me to think about the day ahead,” Randy says peering through his glasses. “I can really ponder what I have going on and clear my head.”

Randy is the Activities Director at Seagrass Village of Panama City Beach, where he’s the master of all things fun. From setting up social hours to church services, Randy is the go-to person when the community’s Independent Living crowd wants to have some excitement.

“Who can say they entertain for hours on end?” Randy says smiling. “I sure can. It’s like a party every day.”

Originally from Tennessee with a stop in Michigan, Randy is a product of the upbringing by his grandparents and sees serving those in senior housing for 30 years as an extension of his past. He’s always seemingly been around older people.

“What I do today and have been doing all these years is just, well, natural. I’ve been around older people my entire life and helping them enhance their lives is the reason for my life and ultimately my career.”

When asked if he’s committed to being the best Activities Director around, without hesitation Randy says yes. Yet it’s not about the actual activities, social hours or events.

“I love my job and what I do, but it’s the relationships formed here that really matter to me. The residents here are my family and I feel like I’m a part of theirs.”

So, is Randy Patton the committed runner just as committed to the residents in his community? Sounds like it.

And just like that, he’ll be back at it again at 5:15 tomorrow morning.

He’ll have four miles to plan the best experiences for those lucky enough to live in Seagrass Village of Panama City Beach.
